TRAIN: Train is also another option and the closest station would be Burwood, which runs on the Alamein Line.
What can I expect at my first appointment?
When you first visit Hartwell Dentistry, you will be greeted by our patient coordinator, Skye. She will assist with the registration process and help the team prepare for your visit.

During your 60 minute comprehensive examination, it is our aim to get to know you, your dental history, your current state of health and what is important to you regarding your oral health.

To help us, we will take some digital images and photos to better understand the health of your mouth.

Together, you and your dentist can then discuss your risk profile and what areas require attention.

How will I pay?
Hartwell Dentistry accepts VISA and Mastercard, eftpos, cheques and cash.

If you have private health insurance we have HICAPS.

HICAPS gives our patients the benefit of claiming their treatment on the day.

For more extensive treatment we also offer interest free payment plans, which can be discussed with Skye, our dedicated patient coordinator.

How much will it cost?
Each and everyone of our patients are different. We tailor your treatment and associated fees to your individual needs. Together, you and your dentist will work together to choose the best treatment plan for you.
How much does teeth cleaning cost?

When you visit one of our Oral Health Therapists, they will do an initial assessment to determine how many appointments are required. Sometimes, more than one appointment is required to complete the clean. Following this initial phase, regular review appointments would be made at 3, 4, 6 or 12 monthly intervals to review and maintain your gum health following treatment.

During the oral health appointment, they will complete a thorough scale and clean as well as diagnostic tests to help them better understand the health of your gums and bone and what level of risk you are for gum disease and possible tooth loss.

Our staff will also assist you in your at home routine, so that you can maintain great oral health between your appointments.

At what age should I bring my child along?
First impressions last, so it is often important for a child to have their first visit at the dentist earlier on. It is usually advised that they are brought in when their new teeth erupt – usually before the age of 2. In this appointment, the child is slowly introduced to the dental environment. This allows the child to become familiar with the idea of regular dental treatment, reducing dental anxiety and fear – which can lead to a lifetime of good oral hygiene habits and healthy teeth.

FAQ: Dental Care & Treatment

What if I have questions about my treatment?
Our dedicated Patient Coordinator will assist you and answer your questions regarding your individual treatment plan and needs.
Teeth Whitening: Will I have sensitivity?
Some people may experience sensitivity while whitening their teeth. Sensitivity can be reduced by using a desensitizing product supplied. Patients whose teeth are sensitive to thermal changes before whitening commences are likely to notice an increase in this sensitivity during the whitening treatment. Sensitivity is self-limiting and will resolve within several days.
Are there issues with oxygen-based bleaching methods?
They do not change the colour of dental fillings. After a whitening treatment, it may be necessary to have fillings resurfaced or replaced to match the new shade of the natural tooth structure. They elevate the level of oxygen in the outer (enamel) surface of the tooth, and because this can affect dental adhesives used for bonding, any procedures on the same teeth which require bonding must be delayed for at least 2 weeks after the end of the bleaching treatment.
Are peroxides safe to use?
Hydrogen peroxide (the active agent of whitening systems) is actually produced in the body in small amounts, and its effects have been studied for many years. When bleaching is supervised and is carried out according to instructions, it appears to be a safe, simple procedure. The only minor complications are rare cases of slight gum irritation and of heightened sensitivity of the teeth particularly to cold stimuli.
Why do my gums bleed?
Bleeding gums – although common, is not normal or healthy. Bleeding gums are a sign of gum disease.

There are generally two types of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gingivitis is less severe and occurs when plaque (a bacterial matrix) and calculus (hard deposits of plaque) cause the gums to be irritated, inflamed and swollen. As a result, gums can spontaneously bleed or bleed at the slightest touch (e.g. brushing teeth, flossing, biting into food). As bleeding gums is usually the first sign of gum disease, it is important to have it attended to as early as possible. A dental professional can remove the  plaque and calculus to aid in reducing the gum irritation. Healthy gums can be maintained with regular dental appointments to review and remove the plaque/calculus.

Following from gingivitis, periodontitis can occur. Periodontitis occurs when plaque and calculus cause the bone surrounding the tooth to deteriorate. Periodontitis can lead to gum and bone loss which can cause sensitivity of the teeth. At its later stages, periodontitis can cause teeth to become loose and eventually be lost. It is important to see a dental professional for advice and early treatment for best results. Following treatment, it is important to attend for regular dental examinations to review your gum health.

Risk for gum disease can also be related to risk for heart disease (heart attack and stroke), diabetes and other systemic diseases. Healthy gums can have a profound effect on your overall health.
