Veneers

Hello to everyone!

In this blog by Dentist Camberwell will be discussing Veneers.

In dentistry, a veneer is a thin layer of restorative material placed over a tooth surface, either to improve the aesthetics, strenght or replaced decayed or weakened structure of a tooth.

Reasons why a veneer may be required

At Hartwell Dental Excellence we may use a veneer to restore a single tooth that may have been fractured, decayed, worn or discoloured.

Multiple veneers can close spaces, lengthen teeth that have been shortened by wear, provide a uniform colour, shape and symmetry and make the teeth appear straight.

Types of veneers

There are two types of veneers: ceramic veneers and resin – based composite veneers.

Ceramic veneers

Ceramic veneers are extremely thin shells made of a strong and durable dental ceramic which is very similar to our natural enamel in look. A small amount (0.5 – 1mm) of enamel from the front and side of the tooth is usually removed. This makes room for the veneer and prevents the restored tooth from feeling and looking bulky or unnatural.

Resin – based composite veneers

Resin – based composite veneers generally are placed in one appointment. This material is softer and not as colour stable as ceramic. After the tooth is prepared or reshaped, the composite material is bonded and shaped in a colour which matches your other teeth. A special light is used to harden the composite. The veneer is smoothed and polished to look like a natural tooth.
