In an Emergency, it is important that you see a Dentist as soon possible.

How We Can Help

Dental emergencies include: sensitive teeth, dental trauma (chipped or knocked out teeth) and lost fillings or crowns.

  • Use Dental Floss to remove any debris in between the teeth.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures, and biting in the area when consuming food or drink.
  • Pain relief/ anti-inflammatory medication such as paracetamol or Ibuprofen may be used as per your pharmacist/doctor's instructions.
  • Gently clean the area with a soft toothbrush.
  • Avoid chewing hot, cold or sweet food on this side if possible, as it may be sensitive.
  • Orthodontic wax may be purchased from your local chemist to mould over the tooth if particularly sensitive to touch.
  • Call us as soon as possible. The quicker you see a dentist, the lower the risk of complications and higher the chance to reattach the tooth.
  • If displaced, gently move the tooth back into position with a clean cloth.
  • If knocked out, clean the tooth under running water and place the tooth in milk or clingwrap, before getting to Hartwell Dentistry as quickly as possible.
  • Locate the lost crown or veneer, and keep them safe. Crowns can often be recemented without the need for a replacement.
  • Even if you don't experience any symptoms, the tooth may be vulnerable to further damage, so please call us as soon as possible.
  • Clean the area with a cloth.
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce bleeding and swelling.
  • If bleeding continues, go directly to a hospital emergency department.
  • If bleeding stops, apply a warm salty water mouth rinse to keep the area clean and aid in healing.
  • If protruding against the cheek or gum, you can try gently pushing into a more comfortable position.
  • Dental wax, gauze or cotton balls may be alternatively be used to lessen protrusion.
