Microbial Testing for Healthier Gums
Looking beyond the symptoms
Bleeding gums, deep pockets and bone loss tell us that gum disease is present—but they don’t tell us which bacteria are causing the infection.
At Hartwell Dentistry, we use advanced PCR DNA microbial testing to identify the bacteria responsible for your periodontal disease. This gives us a clearer understanding of your infection and allows us to personalise your treatment rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
What is microbial testing?
Microbial testing is quick, simple and comfortable.
Small samples are collected from around your gums and sent to a specialised laboratory, where they are analysed for the major bacteria known to cause periodontal disease.
The results show:
- Which harmful bacteria are present
- How much of each bacterium is present
- Your overall bacterial risk profile
- Whether additional targeted treatment may be beneficial
This information is combined with your periodontal examination, X-rays and medical history to create a treatment plan tailored specifically to you.
Why does it matter?
No two cases of gum disease are the same.
Two people may have similar bleeding or pocket depths but completely different bacterial profiles. Knowing which bacteria are present helps us:
- Personalise your periodontal treatment
- Decide whether antimicrobial therapy may be appropriate
- Monitor your response to treatment
- Develop a long-term maintenance plan to reduce future disease
Our goal isn’t to eliminate all bacteria—healthy bacteria are essential. Instead, we aim to reduce harmful bacteria, control inflammation and create a healthier, more stable oral environment.
The oral-body connection
Gum disease is a chronic bacterial infection that doesn’t just affect your mouth. Ongoing inflammation has been linked with a number of general health conditions, including:
- Diabetes
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Pregnancy complications
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Cognitive decline
While microbial testing is not a medical screening test for these conditions, it helps us better understand and manage the infection contributing to your overall inflammatory burden.
Is microbial testing right for you?
Microbial testing may be recommended if you:
- Have moderate or severe gum disease
- Continue to bleed despite good home care
- Have persistent or recurring periodontal problems
- Are considering dental implants or complex dental treatment
- Have diabetes or other medical conditions that increase periodontal risk
A more personalised approach
By combining a thorough periodontal examination with advanced microbial testing, we can better understand your gum disease, provide more targeted treatment, and help you achieve healthier gums for the long term.
